George Garvin Brown, a bourbon-merchant turned entrepreneur born in Munfordville, KY in 1846, embarked on a journey that would revolutionize the bourbon industry. In 1870, with $5,500 in saved and borrowed funds, he and his half-brother founded J.T.S. Brown and Bro. Their creation, Old Forester, became America’s first bottled bourbon, setting a new standard by exclusively selling bourbon in sealed glass bottles to ensure quality and consistency.
Over the years, Old Forester adapted to changing regulations, survived Prohibition, and continued to thrive, becoming the only bourbon sold by the same company before, during, and after Prohibition. Today, Old Forester Distillery stands as a beacon of tradition and innovation, housing an active cooperage alongside its aging spirits, preserving its heritage while embracing modern techniques.
Under the expert supervision of Master Distiller Chris Morris since 2006, the distillery crafts its signature straight bourbon whisky using a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. Situated on historic Whisky Row in the original building utilized by the distillery from 1882 to 1919, adds to the allure. Visitors can enjoy a tour or head straight to the tasting room, where the newest expression of Old Forester Birthday Bourdon, and other allocated Old Forester products, can typically be found for a reasonable price as part of a tasting flight.
